Serve legal documents anywhere in Maine with confidence. Served 123 LLC coordinates sheriffs and disinterested private process servers across all 16 Maine counties — from Portland and York County in the south through Augusta, Lewiston, and Bangor to the Down East coast and Aroostook's potato country — delivering same-day service and returns that hold up in any Maine Superior or District Court.
Under Me. R. Civ. P. 4(c), service of process in Maine may be made by the sheriff or sheriff's deputy of the county where service is effected, a constable, or any disinterested person who is not a party and is at least 18 years of age. Maine does not require statewide licensing of private process servers, but Maine Superior Courts scrutinize returns tightly — particularly on whether the server qualifies as "disinterested" and whether the affidavit is properly sworn.
Personal service is the default. Under Me. R. Civ. P. 4(d)(1), if personal service cannot be made, substituted service may be effected by leaving copies at the individual's dwelling house or usual place of abode with some person of suitable age and discretion then residing therein. Service on entities is governed by Rule 4(d)(3). Service outside Maine uses Rule 4(e), combined with Maine's Long-Arm Statute at 14 M.R.S. §704-A. Service by publication under Rule 4(g) requires a court order after a diligent-search showing. Return of service is under Rule 4(h).
Maine's 16 counties span everything from the Portland metro to Aroostook County — which by itself is larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. A server unfamiliar with Down East geography or the north woods can burn days. Served 123 LLC routes based on region: Portland/Lewiston metros get rush capacity; Aroostook and Washington County get servers who actually live in-region.
